Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR)

Most Skilled Worker holders qualify after 5 years if they meet absence, salary, and knowledge of English rules. Use the tools and checklist below to plan your submission with confidence.

Eligibility overview

  • Continuous residence for the route length (usually 5 years for Skilled Worker).
  • No excess absences in any rolling 12 month period within the qualifying period.
  • Knowledge of English and a pass in the Life in the UK Test unless exempt.
  • For employment routes, you normally still meet route rules at the time of application.

Absence rule

You must not exceed 180 days outside the UK in any rolling 12 month period within your qualifying period. Keep records of entry and exit dates and reasons. If you are close to the limit, plan travel carefully.

Documents checklist

  • Current passport and any previous passports used in the period.
  • BRP or eVisa details if applicable.
  • Life in the UK Test pass certificate.
  • Knowledge of English evidence if required.
  • Employment routes: recent payslips and an employer letter confirming role and ongoing employment.
  • Any additional documents listed in official guidance for your route.

Fees and services

  • Application fee applies and can vary by route and service level.
  • IHS is not paid for ILR applications.
  • Priority and Super Priority services may be available for faster decisions.

Practical next steps

  1. Use the ILR Calculator to find your earliest safe date.
  2. Collect documents and book the Life in the UK Test if you still need it.
  3. Review absences. If close to the limit, consider waiting for a safer window.
  4. Complete the online form, upload documents, and attend biometrics if required.
