Most in-country applications verify identity through UKVCAS (fingerprints + photo at a centre). Some applicants are invited to use the UK Immigration ID Check app instead (remote identity from your phone). This chapter explains what to prepare, what happens on the day, and what to expect afterwards.
You’ll be told which route you must use (centre vs app). Follow the instructions shown in your application account.
What this step does
Before a decision can be made, the Home Office needs to confirm your identity and collect biometrics (and ensure your documents are uploaded/visible to caseworkers).
- UKVCAS centre: you attend an appointment where staff capture fingerprints and a photo.
- ID Check app: you scan your passport chip and complete liveness checks on your phone—no centre visit.
Before your appointment
A bit of prep makes the appointment fast and drama-free.
- Finish uploads: ensure all required documents are uploaded in the right portal/section.
- Read the confirmation: note the address, arrival time, and any centre-specific rules (no large bags, no companions, etc.).
- Children/dependants: check if they must attend; rules differ by age and case.
- Travel plan: arrive early; some centres refuse late arrivals.
Uploads (make them easy to read)
- Clean PDFs: straight, legible scans; combine multi-page files.
- Descriptive names:
passport.pdf
,cos-summary.pdf
,payslips-3months.pdf
,life-in-the-uk-pass.pdf
. - Translations: include the original plus a certified translation (statement, date, contact).
- If the centre offers scanning: still upload yourself where possible—self-uploads are usually faster and cheaper than on-site scanning.
What to bring
- Passport (and any document the booking explicitly requires).
- Appointment confirmation (QR code or reference).
- Backup copies of key uploads (on your phone or printed) in case you’re asked to re-scan.
- For dependants: birth/marriage/relationship evidence if requested.
If you renewed your passport after submitting, bring both passports and make sure your application account reflects the current details.
On the day (UKVCAS centre)
Expect a simple, ordered flow:
- Check-in with ID and booking reference.
- Locker for personal items if required (phones may need to be stored).
- Biometrics: fingerprints and photograph.
- Document check only if your appointment includes on-site scanning (otherwise uploads are used).
- Exit: the centre usually won’t discuss decisions or timelines.
Using the ID Check app (if invited)
If your portal lets you use the app, complete the steps carefully:
- Stable lighting & connection; follow the prompts to scan your e-passport chip.
- Liveness checks (head turns, blinks) must pass; retry in brighter light if needed.
- Finish all steps until you see a clear confirmation in your application account.
- Keep screenshots of completion for your records.
After the appointment (what’s normal)
- Processing continues; watch your email (and spam) for updates or further information requests.
- Decision delivery: you’ll either get a digital outcome (eVisa updated) or instructions about passport/collection where applicable.
- Status evidence: ensure your eVisa account links to your current passport; if you still have a BRP, follow the instructions given in your decision.
Troubleshooting & rescheduling
- No suitable slots: check multiple centres/dates; premium slots may appear first. Re-check at different times of day.
- Need to reschedule: use the portal—don’t miss the appointment. Late/no-shows can delay cases.
- Upload issues: re-export files as PDFs (smaller size), try a different browser, and keep filenames short.

FAQs
Do I need to print everything for the appointment?
Usually no—uploads are preferred. Some centres can scan documents for a fee. Bringing a few printed essentials (passport data page, key letters) can help if a re-scan is requested.
I can’t find a free slot—what now?
Check multiple centres and times; premium slots may show first. Keep refreshing over a couple of days. If deadlines are tight, consider a paid slot if available.
Can I travel while my in-country application is pending?
Often not advisable—leaving the UK (or the Common Travel Area) can be treated as withdrawing an in-country application. Verify the current rule for your route before travelling.
Do children have to attend biometrics?
It depends on age and case specifics. Your portal/booking instructions will say who must attend. Bring any requested relationship documents.
Will the centre tell me the decision?
No. Centres only collect biometrics and (sometimes) scan documents. Decisions are communicated later by the Home Office/portal.
My passport changed after I submitted. What should I do?
Bring both passports to the appointment (if attending) and update your application/eVisa account with the new details as instructed.
Information only — not legal advice. Processes and availability (centres, ID app) change. Always follow instructions in your application account and verify current guidance if unsure.
