Maintenance / support letter (dependants)
Use this letter when a UK-based partner/parent will maintain a dependant during their stay. Keep the scope specific, the numbers realistic, and attach clear proof of funds.
When this letter helps
- Your route expects evidence that dependants will be maintained without public funds, and the rules allow support from the UK-based partner/parent.
- You want to add clarity alongside bank statements, payslips, and accommodation proof.
What to attach (typical)
- Personal bank statements (usually last 3 months).
- Recent payslips (e.g., last 3 months) and, if helpful, a short employer letter.
- Proof of address/accommodation: tenancy/mortgage + council tax or utility bill.
- Copy of your UK status: eVisa/BRP share code/screenshot or British passport bio page.
Good practice
- Make sure names/addresses match across statements, payslips and the letter.
- Explain large recent deposits briefly (salary bonus, relocation reimbursement, savings transfer).
- Use clear PDFs, combined where multi-page; label files sensibly (e.g.,
bank-2025-07-09.pdf
).
Important notes
- Some categories allow a sponsor to certify maintenance (on a CoS); others require funds to be shown in specific accounts/names. Always check the live rule for your route.
- This letter supports your file; it doesn’t replace the need to meet any prescribed financial thresholds or formats.

How caseworkers read financial evidence
- They look for a consistent story across the letter, statements, and payslips.
- Regular income covering normal living costs is clearer than one large unexplained lump sum.
- Where a specific holding period is required, they check the whole period (no gaps, no sudden unexplained credits).
Common pitfalls (and quick fixes)
- Documents don’t match → ensure names/addresses align; update your bank profile if needed.
- Unexplained large deposit → add a one-line explanation and, if possible, a receipt/letter.
- Thin or blurry scans → re-export to PDF; avoid shadows and cropped edges.
